About the Event
Session 1- Biological molecules (Glucose- Starch vs Glycogen, Amino Acids- Actin vs [enzyme], Fatty Acids- Triglycerides, Water):
Profiling four classes of molecules. This session focusses on the chemical properties, bonds, and structure of key molecular building blocks. Parallels among all four groups will be explored, building up to a standard ‘template’ for answering exam style questions. How could life exist in the methane lakes of Titan?
Session 2- Cells (eukaryotic vs prokaryotic):
Foundations of cellular biology including introduction to cell theory. Comprehensive discussion of eukaryotic vs prokaryotic cells – a recurring theme throughout most of the A Level, built up from a revision of GCSE level knowledge. When does a kidney bean not look like a kidney bean?
Session 3- Diffusion:
Simple vs facilitated (case study of the lungs and case study of glucose absorption): “The interesting thing about particles is that they’re constantly bumping into one another”. Diffusion is an enormously important topic at A Level- so a good foundation is key. Comparison of simple and facilitated diffusion with two biologically relevant case studies which pre-empt other common A Level topics. Why does one equation govern most biological processes?
Session 4- Mitosis, cell cycles, differentiation, and gene expression:
Detailed analysis of the stages of cell division, and understanding the importance of ‘structure to function’. Discussion of the theory of stem cells and the ethics of stem cell research. Introduction to transcription factors, and the lac operon. What lessons can be learned from the book 'My Sister’s Keeper'?
