About the Event
Session 1- Thinking critically and analysing literature 1 (Poetry).
In this first lesson, students will learn about the tools necessary to approach a work of poetry. What makes the poem unique? How poetry can help us to see things differently. In addition, students will sit a crash course in rhyme and meter, and gain insight into how some of the great poems by canonical writers (like Shakespeare) were composed.
Session 2 - Thinking critically and analysing literature 2 (the Novel).
Here, students will be introduced to the novel and all its facets. Just how did this parvenu literary genre came to be so important? What can the great novelists tell us about the human mind? The modernist novel and the future of the genre.
Session 3 - Comparative literature and introduction to literary theory.
In the lesson, we’ll explore two texts together and analyse the formal differences. Then, we’ll look at some of the more notable theories and apply them to our own texts. Students will be encouraged to explore their own interpretation.
Session 4 -Applying critical thinking to an unseen text.
Using the material covered in lessons 1-3 students will work together to evaluate and comment upon the formal properties of an unseen text. Students will present their ideas in the latter half of the lesson.
